Who are you and what do you do for a living?
Hi, my name is Jamie. I am a technology consultant in Washington, DC who enjoys woodworking and tinkering with all machines. I, like many office warriors, made the move to a standing desk after discovering the health hazards of sitting over 8 hours a day. After receiving the wonderful news I was having a daughter, I converted my home office into a nursery and ultimately lost the space for my desk. Without any standing desks available for a small place in my living room, I decided to design one out of wood at the local TechShop DC makerspace. After several iterations and updates, I designed the StandCrafted desk you see here.
Can you tell us something about your desk setup?
StandCrafted combines elegance and ergonomics in the StandCrafted Spine, a floating core mounted to virtually any type of wall structure. The Spine supports modules that easily slide securely into place for quick configuration changes. Modules include a VESA-compatible monitor mount, a small table, a keyboard/mouse/trackpad mount and a laptop holder. The Spine also functions as a cable management system to maintain a clutter-free workspace. StandCrafted comes in three materials: LEED-certified recyclable plastic (8 colors), LEED-certified bamboo, and sustainably harvested maple, which all bring a great minimalistic feel to any work environment.
What’s the story behind that desk?

Is there anything you would like to improve on this setup?
As you can see in the photo, my StandCrated desk is a unique wall-mounted design. I would improve my desk by adding more vertically-mounted swappable modules for the various tasks I might perform throughout the day, e.g.:
- a laptop module that allows viewing of the laptop screen below the cinema display
- a small angled drafting table so I can sketch ideas on my tablet fied to the desk
- a video game module to mount my PS4 for arcade-style gaming in my free time
Is there something on your desk which helps you stay focused? What is it?
I don’t have much residing on my desk due to the minimalistic standing design! I like to stand because that in itself helps me stay focused and more productive which I suspect is due to improved circulation influencing better brain function. I’m also reminded throughout the day that I can’t stand forever and I need to get my work done! I do have a few things on or near my desk to help:
- wall-mounted potted plants
- a hot cup of Bulletproof Coffee w/ whipped grass-fed butter
P.S.: If you’re interested in supporting StandCrafted, please back their project on Kickstarter.
