AJ Shankar's Desk

Equipment

Hello, my name is AJ Shankar. I’m the CEO and founder of legal technology company Everlaw. I’m also an engineer with a Ph.D. in Computer Science.

Can you tell us something about your desk setup?

I use a standing desk. Standing keeps me and my body active. I made it myself using an IKEA hack. However, it’s not great to stand all day, so I also have a bar stool that I use about half the time. It’s just uncomfortable enough that I don’t want to sit on it for long. I have one big 27 inch monitor, because two seems to have bad ergonomics, making me constantly crane my neck. I use a Kinesis Advantage keyboard, and do most of my work on a Linux desktop and a hybrid Windows laptop. The keyboard looks ridiculous, but it actually helps a lot with touch typing and with preventing injury. Even as I shift between primarily writing code to primarily writing emails, it keeps my hands healthy. The log represents one of the rotations our development team shares. It represents the “log analysis duty” I had that day.

Is there anything you would like to improve on this setup?

Get some better table tennis rackets!

Is there something on your desk which helps you stay focused? What is it?

Headphones: I focus better when I hear fewer external noises.
