Jon Wheatley's Desk

Who are you and what do you do for a living?

I’m Jon Wheatley. I’m currently CPO and co-founder of Need/Want. Essentially we’re a company that makes companies. We have 5 active companies right now that range from software, services, and physical products.

Can you tell me something about your desk setup?

This is my desk at the Need/Want office. I try my best to keep it as clean and organized as it is in these pictures but it rarely is so.

Is there anything you would like to improve on this setup?

My desk is actually a cheap dinner table from IKEA. It looks OK but it’s a litttttttle bit too low which means I sometimes have trouble fitting my legs and my chair arms under it.

Do you switch workspaces during your day? If yes, what’s the reason behind it?

Not really. I have a laptop that I work from at home occasionally but I do most of my work in the office.

Do you have a favourite item on your desk?

I love my mod notebook. I use my Mod (which is a Need/Want product) every day. It’s super useful having digital backups of everything you write down when you’re done.

Just got my @modnotebooks digitized. Its very cool seeing every page displayed digitally. All art by @skylaarsays.

What are you doing to stay focused?

We play “keepieuppies”. We have a little mini football that we bought for a few dollars on amazon and every so often we’ll all take a break and play. The goal of the game is to keep the ball up without it touching the floor (hence the name “keepieuppies”) using every part of your body apart from your hands. It’s a great way to get a quick work out in during the day. It definitely helps me stay focused.

Is there something on your desk which helps you stay focused? What is it?

See above.

What was your latest self improvement experiment?

For the past 8ish months I have been making a gif of whatever I am doing at 8:36pm and posting it to http://jonw.com.

This has been useful for a few reasons. First it has GREATLY improved my memory. I can scroll back to a specific day and the gif always takes me back to exactly what I was doing on that day. It has also made me a lot more conscious of what I do in the evenings. When I think people might be watching I try to make sure I’m not just sat at home being unproductive for too many days in a row.

Where do you see yourself and your desk in the next 5 years?

Hopefully more of the same! Perhaps in a slightly bigger office with a slightly nicer view.
