Hi, I’m Karl Ranna. I help build amazing user experiences on the web by seeking beauty on a pixel level.

Can you tell us something about your desk setup?

This is a mobile work environment since I move around a lot. Everything fits in my suitcase. The books below the macbook can be replaced with whatever I find near the new location (cardboard boxes etc.) I’ve also written a blog post why my setup helps avoiding neck and shoulder pain.

Do you use other ergonomic hacks when switching workplaces?

My main ergonomics hack is to just lie down once an hour for couple of minutes (it also helps to digest the big problem at hand) and have the laptop display set to eye level. Other than that I practice ashtanga yoga 6 days a week (pretty much every morning) and go dancing (salsa, bachata, kizomba) in the evening. Moving around couple of hours in the morning/evening isn’t however a replacement to having a good ergonomic workspace.

Is there anything you would like to improve on this setup?

I originally planned to switch out the $9 keyboard and old Razer mouse for Apple’s products, but I’ve actually become quite fond of this cheap keyboard. Other than that I’ll probably replace my big Wharfedale dock for a smaller high quality boombox just because it takes up too much room in my suitcase. I travel light - just the essentials.

Is there something on your desk which helps you stay focused? What is it?

Nothingness. I like to keep my desk as clean as possible to avoid distractions.
