Justin Scheetz's Desk

Justin Scheetz is a WordPress theme/plugin developer for the last 7 years who works under the name Boxy Studio and sells items exclusively on the Envato marketplaces. He also created Ticksy, a customer support app aimed at product developers like himself.

Let’s take a look where those beautiful themes are being developed.

Can you tell me something about your desk setup?

Apple fanatic here. I’ve got a 13” Retina MacBook Pro hooked up to a Cinema Display with my iPad on the other side. I use both screens (two screens is so great) and have my iPad displaying minimal but important stats (support ticket counts, etc.) using Panic’s Status Board app.

Is there anything you would like to improve on this setup?

Honestly not much. I used to work outside the office quite often, but now that I have a better office space I don’t have the need to keep a laptop as much. So if anything, I’d trade that in for a more powerful iMac.

Do you switch workspaces during your day? If yes, what’s the reason behind it?

Working from home with a family requires me to separate work from home. I try very hard not to work on the living room couch if I can help it. The office is for work and the house is for family.

Can you tell us something about the items on your desk?

My desk is extremely minimal and done that way on purpose. The only other items on my desk that I don’t really use to work every day are a plant and an LED lamp—oh and always a cup of coffee. I keep a Chemex in the office and have a subscription to Craft Coffee. It’s a great combo.

What are you doing to stay focused?

Music is the best thing for me. I have a Wren wireless speaker I use for streaming my music. It can be used for background noise, or I can crank it up when I need to really block out all other noise and it still sounds fantastic.

Is there something on your desk which helps you stay focused? What is it?

It’s not on my desk, but the aquarium I keep in the office really helps me focus. There’s something calming about watching fish, and If I need a break I can feed them or do other fish tank maintenance. It’s a nice way to break up the day.

What was your latest self improvement experiment?

I’m getting back into running. It’s something that clears the mind and improves the body. If you enjoy running even a little, I highly recommend making a habit out of it. An obsession is even better.

Where do you see yourself and your desk in the next 5 years?

Moving to this new space and desk was a big step for my business. I can now really focus on my time management skills, getting new products done and old products improved.
